Running Pace Calculator
Calculate your running pace (min/km & min/mile), finish time, and target distance.
Distance & Time
Target Pace Output
5:00 /km
8:02 /mi
Total Distance: 10.00 km (6.21 miles)
Speed: 12.00 km/h (7.46 mph)
How It Works & Methodology
Running pace measures the rate of activity expressed as the amount of time (minutes and seconds) required to cover one kilometer or one mile. In contrast, speed measures the distance covered per unit of time (such as km/h or mph).
Pace Formulas:
- Pace per km = Total Time (seconds) / Distance (km)
- Pace per mile = Total Time (seconds) / Distance (miles)
- Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) / [Total Time (seconds) / 3600]
Heart Rate Training Zones & Aerobic Threshold
Endurance runners utilize heart rate training zones to structure workouts for optimal aerobic endurance and recovery:
- Zone 1 (50–60% HRmax) - Active Recovery: Easy conversational effort that promotes blood flow and recovery.
- Zone 2 (60–70% HRmax) - Aerobic Base: The cornerstone of marathon base building; burns primarily fat for fuel.
- Zone 3 (70–80% HRmax) - Tempo: Moderate effort improving aerobic capacity and stamina.
- Zone 4 (80–90% HRmax) - Lactate Threshold: Hard effort right at the point where lactic acid begins accumulating in the blood.
- Zone 5 (90–100% HRmax) - VO2 Max / Anaerobic: Maximum interval sprints for short bursts of speed.
